How do the meals work?
Meals are usually announced once they're ready. In the dining hall, there’s a cabinet with dishes, and food is served buffet-style on the side. It’s all self-service.
If you're up early and want a coffee, feel free to turn on the coffee machine—ideally brew a whole pot for everyone.
Once you’re finished eating, please bring your dishes to the kitchen. They'll be washed afterward. We always appreciate a helping hand with cleanup.
If you get peckish in between meals, you'll find fruit and some sweets in the dining hall that you're welcome to help yourself to at any time.
I follow a special diet. Can I bring or prepare my own food?
There are two kitchens on-site. One is usually not in use, so it’s possible to prepare your own food there—especially if you have allergies, medical conditions, dietary needs, or other specific requirements.
Fridge space is also available.
I'm sleeping in the castle. Do I need to bring bedding?
Yes. Even if you’ve secured a sleeping spot in the castle, you’ll need to bring a pillow, blanket, and fitted sheet. The latex mattresses alone don’t offer a comfortable sleeping experience.
If you're traveling from afar and have limited luggage space (e.g., when flying), feel free to contact us in advance—we’ll do our best to provide extra bedding on-site.
What training gear should I bring?
If the weather is nice, training takes place outside on the castle lawn. We recommend outdoor clothing and your own protective gear. Workshop descriptions usually specify what equipment is required and whether loaner simulators are available.
Indoor training shoes are also a good idea in case the weather turns and we move training to a gym.
How strict is your event schedule?
We treat our schedule more like a guideline. We try to stay on time, but delays happen. Don’t worry—you won’t miss anything important. Major events like meals or workshops are always announced. Just keep your ears open for the announcement music. 🌞🍭🌈
What are the restroom facilities like?
The hostel has three toilets, two of which include showers. Hot water is available. Typically, we use the basement restrooms as unisex toilets, the ground-floor bathroom for men, and the upstairs one for women. The exact layout is announced and signposted on-site each year.
Showers are in individual stalls—there are no communal showers.
Is the location accessible for people with disabilities?
Unfortunately, no. As it’s a historic building, there are stairs, steps, and door thresholds throughout that need to be navigated.
Is there a way to keep medications refrigerated on-site?
There are two refrigerators in the house. They’re usually packed with beer and barbecue supplies—but there’s always a spot that can be made available for medications.
Can I bring my children?
Absolutely! However, it may affect your room booking. If children are old enough to need their own bed, you’ll need to book a separate spot for them. If they still sleep in bed with their parent or guardian, they can be brought along without an extra booking.
Please let us know when registering so we can plan accordingly. If enough children are registered, we’ll do our best to organize a childcare program during the workshops.
I forgot to bring something! Are there any supermarkets or shops nearby?
Burg Husen is a bit off the beaten path, but the nearest supermarket—a Lidl located at Reichshofstraße 11–13 in Schwerte-Westhofen—is just under 3 km from the fencing school.
Please note: in Germany, most stores—including supermarkets—are closed on Sundays.
